Kenya Media Overview

Introduction:
The media industry can be broadly divided into two; the print and the electronic, both segments competing to certain extent to attract customers seeking entertainment, education and other types of information; for example that provided through advertising.

The Print Media
The print media is made up of the regular daily newspapers, magazines, regional newspapers and printed sheets. The print media business started before the electronic media with the establishment of standard newspaper in 1992 and circulation has grown overtime to reach daily circulation of over 400,000 copies in 2006.

The Electronic Media
The TV and Radio business were predominantly dominated by the state monopolist, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation up to 1998. In 1999 for the first time, three private TV stations (KTN, STV and Citizen) were licensed to compete with KBC. In the year 2002, the number of stations shot up to six. Today there are over ten TV stations serving different regions and market segments in Kenya.

In Kenya, the annual growth rate of the transport and communications industry is 8.3% (Economic survey, May 2006). This rate compares well with the global entertainment and media industry which is growing at a compounded annual rate of 6.6% according to a report released by Coopers in February 2006. The different players in this market command different proportions of the market share in the segments they serve.
